FSMA

The Financial Services Authority regulates financial services activity in England and Wales. Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP and its affiliated partnerships and undertakings are not authorised by the Financial Services Authority to provide advice in relation to investments and if necessary we will refer you to a firm which is so authorised. We can, however, provide certain limited investment-related services, provided they are closely linked to the legal work being done. In this respect we are regulated by the Law Society, which is the designated professional body for the purposes of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000.  Responsibility for regulation and complaints handling has been separated from the Law Society's representative functions. The Solicitors Regulation Authority is the independent regulatory body of the Law Society and the Legal Complaints Service is the independent complaints handling body of the Law Society. 

Our role always is to act as legal adviser: it is not part of our role to advise on the merits of investment transactions. Any investment decision is entirely a matter for your own decision on the basis of your own assessment and that of any authorised advisers. No communication from us should be regarded as an invitation or inducement to you to engage in investment activity.

We are also included on the register of professional firms maintained by the Financial Services Authority so that we can carry on certain regulated activities such as insurance mediation (which is broadly the advising on, selling and administration of insurance contracts) as an incidental part of our normal professional services. Money laundering

In the UK and other jurisdictions in which we operate, we are required to identify clients for the purpose of anti-money laundering legislation. This means that when we first receive instructions from a client, we are required to identify both our client and (if applicable) the client’s beneficial owner(s) and to verify those identities. We may therefore ask you to provide us with appropriate evidence of identity or other information, which we will retain. If satisfactory evidence or information is not provided within a reasonable time of our request we may have to stop acting for you. In that event you will be charged for work done up to the time we stop acting.

Professional indemnity insurance

In the UK and other jurisdictions in which we operate, we are required to have in place professional indemnity insurance. The name of our professional indemnity insurer is Travelers Insurance Company Limited whose address is 61-63 London Road, Redhill, Surrey, RH1 1NA.

Fraudulent emails

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP has been made aware that from time to time members of the public may be sent fraudulent emails, purporting to come from the firm. The emails contain a copy of the firm's logo and relay imaginative factual circumstances with a request for the recipient to contact the sender, providing personal or confidential information. Such emails are known to the Metropolitan Police and NCIS as "419 scams". An example can be viewed here (click here for example)

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP has no involvement with these emails. Members of the public who are in receipt of a 419 scam email should not to respond to it.
